A Poem from Janet Cannon's
|
my high school student
|
she forgets about melanin
sometimes treats me without
bias i saw her smile once
in class the one for at risk
futures to graduate with a
hope diploma that divorces
poverty for a better life a year
later as i'm rushing from my
day job to my night community
college teaching gig at the
building doorway she stops
me abruptly repeating my
name excitedly she blurts non-
stop do you remember me from
english class? i'm a student
here a community college
student because of you what
you said about how we can do
anything we try for so happy
emphatically i say good job
we talk awhile before rushing to
our respective classes she with
her bright smile beaming huge like
a hug that won't let go like a moon
full of gratitude bigger than a sky
full of stars in her heart where
her dreams breathe where she
found her truth all by herself
